Go Golf @ The Creek

Golfing presents us with a whole new set of problems - often related to issues of alignment, balance, control, and strength. With advanced training specific to the unique challenges facing the golfer, Tony Hernandez, DPT, is ready to help you fine tune your golf performance, correct your swing, decrease your frustration, and improve your score.

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening. It is without doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.

- Arnold Palmer

Several body structures are activated during the golf swing. It takes quite some time to develop a proper and mechanically correct swing. Your Golf Pro may concentrate on fine tuning movement and location of the golf club in order to attain the best result when hitting the ball. As a Physical Therapist, the emphasis changes to improving performance of joints, muscles, flexibility, balance and coordination to best improve the golf swing.

Amateur golfers often lack one or more of the required components. It could be tight or weak musculature, joint stiffness, inadequate balance control, coordination or endurance deficits. As a result, compensatory techniques are developed that can lead to injury or pain when golfing. Your golf swing may never reach your maximum potential.

Balance in the address position places the golfer in a forward bending posture and changes the center or gravity. Postural patterns can resist the back-swing motions resulting in compensatory changes.

Movements of internal rotation during the backswing, with static abduction of the hips and legs are non-functional. The spine responds with a less efficient, non-physiological movement pattern.

Common Swing Faults

  • Rounded back at address
  • Stance too wide
  • Lifting the club into a vertical plane
  • Incomplete body turn
  • Body turns too early
  • One knee out of position
  • Reverse pivot
  • Over swinging
  • Inadequate weight transfer
  • Early release of club at impact
  • Incomplete hip turn through follow-thru
  • Loss of balance at finish

At your first visit, a comprehensive evaluation is performed to determine where restrictions are present. An individualized program will be developed to address your specific problem areas and may include:

  • Core stabilization
  • Postural modification
  • Strengthening
  • Stretching program
  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Joint mobilization
  • Balance/coordination
  • Endurance training
  • Golf swing analysis

An appropriate physical therapy program assesses and treats faulty areas to assist in developing & regaining the needed muscle strength/flexibility, joint movement, balance/coordination and functional endurance. Golfers need to be trained like golfers, not like runners, weight lifters or football players. With a golf specific program, the results will lead to an improved game and even more important, injury and pain free golf for life.

You and your Golf Game may benefit from Physical Therapy. You can improve your swing, experience less pain after golfing, feel less frustration from limitations and improve your score.
